Description
Located in the Las Manos community of Dipilto, Nueva Segovia, Finca La Picona is producing a
wide range of coffees which highlight Nicaragua as a growing region with diverse flavours.
Owned by Martha Lucía Albir Sotomayor, the estate spans nine hectares and grows a number
of varietals including yellow and red catuaí, Gesha, Java, and the varietal we have here,
Maracaturra.
Maracaturra is a hybrid of Maragogype and Caturra varietals, which give it its distinctive large
beans. This washed lot is grown beneath a canopy of Inga, búcaro and fruit trees, before ripe
beans are picked, floated to check for ripeness, and then rested for 18 hours. The washed
cherries are then fermented in tanks for 24 - 36 hours before being sent to Cafetos de Segovia
dry mill for storage, milling and distribution.
In the cup, expect a well rounded juicy mouthfeel, opening up with citric acidity akin to physalis,
before the sweetness and florality of blossom honey take over, finally ending on a sweet and
gentle malic acidity like a ripe pear to cleanse the palate.
